We are also a family of professional cosplayers. What is cosplay I hear some of you ask?! It’s a relatively uncommon term, unless you frequent film and comic conventions. The Wikipedia description is as follows:
a contraction of the words costume play, is a hobby in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character. Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture, and a broader use of the term “cosplay” applies to any costumed role-playing in venues apart from the stage. Any entity that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject. Favourite sources include manga and anime, comic books and cartoons, video games, and live-action films and television series.
Basically it’s dressing up in your favourite TV/Film/Comic/Anime/video game/book character, going to conventions and meeting other like-minded people and having fun! People re-enact scenes as their chosen character, do photoshoots, go to charity events – basically anywhere that you can bring joy to others in awesome costumes! It was a term originally coined in Japan in the 80s. But over the years it has gradually become worldwide and now is really big business. Conventions are springing up all around the country where fans get the chance to meet and have photos taken with famous actors, meet other people into the same shows as them, buy collectable merchandise, get autographs, enter cosplay competitions and generally have a brilliant time.
